TWO OF A KIND: Jayson Warner Smith and Heather Rule star in the Robert Mello Studio’s production of 'Blackbird'.

“Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable,” so says Cesar Cruz. Blackbird, a play by David Harrower, does just that. The show follows protogonist Ray, a 35-year-old man recently released from prison, and Una, the girl he was imprisoned for sexually assaulting when she was 12-years-old. When Una finds a photo of him and decides to confront him, a story of heart-wrenching love, loss, and the universal struggle of moving on follows. The past and present collide as the production dares audience members to follow what might be the most twisted love story since Romeo and Juliet. Directed by Marc Gowan and starring Heather Rule and Jayson Warner Smith (Walking Dead), Blackbird will sit heavy on your heart with its brutally raw storytelling that’s as uncomfortable as it is and brilliant.

$20. Through Aug. 26. The Blackbox at the 4048, 4048 Flowers Road, Suite 210, Doraville. https://blackbird.brownpapertickets.com/
