GA Medicaid expansion bill moving forward

Atlanta News March 21, 2019

The bill to expand Medicaid in Georgia is headed to a Georgia House vote. It has already cleared the Senate and is actively backed by Governor Kemp. Georgia is one of 14 states whose legislators have steadily refused The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), better known as ”Obamacare.” The Obamacare programs cover people who are low income but aren’t necessarily below the technical definition of poverty. The GA bill under consideration limits this to the poverty line.

A good case for why this bill is inadequate is provided by Erik Randolph writing for the Georgia Center for Opportunity, “Three Reasons Why Medicaid Expansion is Bad for Georgia,” and an analysis of Senate Bill 106 from the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute, ”Senate Bill 106: Medicaid Waivers Could Reshape Georgia’s Health Care System & State Budget.”
