Summerhill Issues: How will GSU and Carter Develop Turner Field?

CL’s ongoing coverage of the Organized Citizens of Summerhill about issues of concern to the neighborhood.

The residents of the Summerhill neighborhood will have a direct impact from the news that Turner Field was sold to Georgia State University and Carter & Associates, a real estate firm in Atlanta.

The reaction from the neighborhood: “It is really a make-good of a promise from 1960. This is the urban renewal that we have been looking for,” [/person-427623-Suzanne-Mitchell|Suzanne Mitchell, President of the Organized Neighbors of Summerhill, said to the AJC. “Summerhill is the oldest neighborhood in the city, originally a settlement for African-Americans and Jews. It deserves better than how it has looked over the last 50 years.”

The formal handover came from the Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority (AFCRA) to GSU and the development team through an RFP process that was led by the AFCRA chief, Keisha Lance Bottoms, the current Mayor of Atlanta.
