Welcome to Creative Loafing’s weekend roundup podcast for July 19-21! Will Cardwell, Jacob Chisenhall, and Sophia Rubin join Music Editor Chad Radford to talk about their top picks for the weekend, including Ex Hex at the Earl, Wild World at Zoo Atlanta, Oye Fest at Masquerade, and more!

Fri., July 26
Animated Record Pop-Up at the Bakery
Introduce yourself to a totally new kind of art during The Bakery’s Animated Record Pop-Up this Friday. Drew Tetz will be putting his trippy animations on display by applying a modern twist to an old style type of animation called phenakistoscopes, in which Tetz combines the use of a record player and camera phone to create the false impression of images moving in space. It’s an artistic event quite unlike anything we bet you’ve seen and you don’t want to miss it! Free. 7 p.m.

— Ex Hex at the Earl
Ex Hex features singer-guitarist Mary Timony of Helium, Betsy Wright (bass, vocals), and Laura Harris (drums). They’re on the road playing songs from their latest album, It’s Real. It’s a pretty rockin’ affair, and kind of a back-loaded record. The energy really picks up with a song called “Diamond Drive” and rides a melodic, forward motion through the b-side. $16-$18. 8 p.m.

Sat., July 27
Atlanta Ice Cream Festival at Piedmont Park
Soak up the summer sun surrounded by friends, fitness, and, most important of all, ice cream! The Atlanta Ice Cream Festival is back for its 9th year, bringing together live music from local artists, health and wellness activities, and America’s favorite summer dessert in the heart of Piedmont Park. Enjoy a frosty treat then burn off the calories with a stimulating work-out by participating in Zumba, yoga, tai chi, or line dancing. And while you’re there, help yourself to a free wellness screening. Free. 11 a.m.

Wild World Weekend at Zoo Atlanta (Saturday and Sunday)
Experience the world at Zoo Atlanta’s Wild World Weekend. Explore different cultures and biodiversity from every continent through special entertainment, crafts, and activities designed for the whole family. See dances from Indonesia, listen to steel drum performers, experience flamenco, and learn origami. It’s like taking a vacation to every country. 9:30 a.m.

Collision Recordings Presents: Ritual Night
Come to the Bakery for a night of Techno bops! With a suggested donation of just $5 dollars, you can listen to some of your favorite techno artists alongside live visual art by Studio Mobius w/ Sami Black & Analogzilla. This night is a particularly special one, as Ritual Night will be John Shallcross’ (Cardio ATL) first Techno set in Atlanta for quite some time, in addition to the musical talents of Ajhenda (Wiggle Factor), Kohanim (Collision Recordings) and tdel (Silent Season). As their website suggests, this an event only for the non-assholes of the world! So leave your thickhead friends at the door and come ready for a night of positive energy and techno vibes. $5 suggested donation. 10 p.m.

The Isley Brothers at Chastain Park Amphitheatre
Get ready to “Twist and Shout” with the Isley Brothers! Since 1954, these four brothers have brought their soul, blues, and motown hits all across the country, garnering multiple Top 10 Billboard singles and four Grammys. The Isley Brothers have inspired generations of musicians, and now they’re reliving all their biggest hits at the beautiful State Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain. Don’t miss this chance to bop around to timeless tunes and experience these musical legends live. $37.50-$87.50. 8 p.m.

— Oye Fest
Oye Fest, Atlanta’s premier Latinx music and arts festival brings a day-long block party, market, and an evening of music in Heaven at the Masquerade Saturday, July 27. The festival’s co-founders Randall Ruiz (Florista) and Margarita Rios stopped by CL’s Short Notice studio to talk about creating a community in Georgia, and the line up for this year’s festival. The free block party and artist market kicks off from 5 p.m. till 2 a.m. in Kenny’s Alley, and features performances by DJ EU, Nino Augustine + Friends, GH Pancho, Esme, DJ Meatball, Jamesjuan007, Mafioso, Brian Rojas, Xavier BLK, Elio Stereo, and Rob Sessions. Inside, the Heaven stage features performances by Nina Sky, Tomasa Del Real, La Goony Chonga, Kibi James, Karina Es Mia, Felicita, Anonima, and Hourglass. $15. 5 p.m.

The Princess Bride at The Fox Theatre
This Saturday, The Princess Bride will be featured on the big screen as part of the 2019 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival. Watching a movie at the fabulous Fox Theatre is always a cinematic experience. The theater is renowned for its classical architecture and long history, so what better place to soak in some of the best films of years past? $10. 7:30 p.m.

Mon., July 29
This Is Not This Heat w/ Bradford Cox at the Earl
Since 1976, This Heat has paved the way for a creative strain of avant-garde, industrial, and post-punk music before punk rock even existed. Surviving members Charles Hayward and Charles Bullen have reunited as This is Not This Heat, putting a cap on a 40 year musical legacy. $35. 7:30 p.m.
