CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC: AUGUST, 2021 — The Delta variant among us

People choose not to get vaccinated, die instead

As of 12:01 a.m. this morning:

  • The total number of tracked coronavirus cases represents 11.3 percent of the population of the United States
  • The total number of tracked active COVID-19 cases represents 0.3 percent of the population.
  • The total number of COVID-19 survivors represents 10.8 percent of the population. (All survivor numbers reported are based on the 14-day U.S. universal recovery time)
  • The total number of fully vaccinated individuals represent only 52.4 percent of the population



The 37,468,712 individuals in the U.S. that have been tracked with having contracted the coronavirus to date break down as follows:

  • Active cases — 1,121,083 cases
  • Deaths — 596,236 deaths; 543,447 with COVID-19 complicating pre-existing conditions resulting in death, 52,789 with COVID-19 the direct cause of death
  • Survivors increased by 35,751,393 individuals



Nationwide, in the past 24 hours:

  • Completed COVID-19 tests increased by 891,043 for a total of 579,364,654 tests conducted
  • Deaths either directly or indirectly linked to COVID-19 increased by 284, of the 284 deaths, 26 were a direct result of COVID-19
  • Survivors of COVID-19 increased by 50,883 individuals



Below are the Georgia Department of Health numbers of total active COVID-19 cases — not the number of new cases — for counties in the metro Atlanta and greater Athens areas since Saturday, Aug. 28. Remember: this is the total number of active cases tracked over the past 14 days, not from the past 24 hours as posted by states below. Again, the percentage on individuals securing only one shot statewide in Georgia is 50.8 percent and fully vaccinated is 41.2 percent, and yes, all of the counties below are below the statewide average:

  • Fulton County — 29.9 percent only one shot, 25.5 percent fully vaccinated
  • DeKalb County — 32.5 percent only one shot, 27.6 percent fully vaccinated
  • Gwinnett County — 30.9 percent only one shot, 26.7 percent fully vaccinated
  • Cobb County — 39.9 percent only one shot, 34.4 percent fully vaccinated
  • Clayton County — 19.3 percent only one shot, 15.8 percent fully vaccinated
  • Athens-Clarke County — 21.0 percent only one shot, 19.8 percent fully vaccinated
  • Oconee County — 24.5 percent only one shot, 23.5 percent fully vaccinated
  • Barrow County — 16.3 percent only one shot, 15.1 percent fully vaccinated
  • Jackson County — 22.5 percent only one shot, 19.8 percent fully vaccinated
  • Hall County — 28.8 percent only one shot, 24.5 percent fully vaccinated



Statewide in Georgia, there are currently 83,050 active COVID-19 cases as of Saturday, Aug. 28, with 66,044 active COVID-19 cases posted the previous Saturday, for a 25.7 percent increase.

Across the country, the top three largest states account for 32.7 percent of new cases as of Saturday, Aug. 28. The states represent 27.7 percent of the population. These states accounted for 33.1 percent of new cases on Saturday, Aug. 21:

  • California — 15,928, 68.6 percent only one shot, 55.6 percent fully vaccinated
  • Texas — 18,185, 56.8 percent only one shot, 47.0 percent fully vaccinated
  • Florida — 27,584, 63.4 percent only one shot, 52.4 percent fully vaccinated



Eight of the southern states account for 25.2 percent of new cases as of Saturday, Aug. 28. The states represent 15.4 percent of the population. These states accounted for 21.6 percent of new cases on Saturday, Aug. 21:

  • Georgia — 11,084, 50.8 percent only one shot, 41.2 percent fully vaccinated
  • Tennessee — 7,635, 49.1 percent only one shot, 41.5 percent fully vaccinated
  • Kentucky — 4,788, 56.6 percent only one shot, 48.2 percent fully vaccinated
  • South Carolina — 6,830, 51.2 percent only one shot, 43.0 percent fully vaccinated
  • North Carolina — 8,105, 55.3 percent only one shot, 46.0 percent fully vaccinated
  • Alabama — 2,021, 49.3 percent only one shot, 37.7 percent fully vaccinated
  • Mississippi — 4,041, 46.3 percent only one shot, 37.7 percent fully vaccinated
  • Louisiana — 3,428, 49.3 percent only one shot, 41.2 percent fully vaccinated



Seven of the northeastern corridor states account for 10.4 percent of new cases as of Saturday, Aug. 28. The states represent 20.1 percent of the population. These states accounted for 10.9 percent of new cases on Saturday, Aug. 21:

  • New York — 6,449, 67.0 percent only one shot, 59.8 percent fully vaccinated
  • New Jersey — 2,092, 69.6 percent only one shot, 61.1 percent fully vaccinated
  • Massachusetts — 1,656, 75.1 percent only one shot, 65.7 percent fully vaccinated
  • Connecticut — 788, 73.7 percent only one shot, 65.7 percent fully vaccinated
  • Pennsylvania — 3,509, 69.1 percent only one shot, 54.9 percent fully vaccinated
  • Virginia — 3,520, 65.0 percent only one shot, 56.9 percent fully vaccinated
  • Maryland — 1,373 Saturday ... 67.9 percent only one shot, 61.2 percent fully vaccinated



The Great Lakes States account for 12.7 percent of new cases as of Saturday, Aug. 28. The states represent 19.4 percent of the population. These states accounted for 14.1 percent of new cases on Saturday, Aug. 21:

  • Illinois — 4,942, 65.6 percent only one shot, 50.9 percent fully vaccinated
  • Michigan — 2,278, 55.1 percent only one shot, 50.3 percent fully vaccinated
  • Minnesota — 1,902, 61.6 percent only one shot, 55.7 percent fully vaccinated
  • Ohio — 4,855, 52.3 percent only one shot, 48.2 percent fully vaccinated
  • Indiana — 4,831, 49.9 percent only one shot, 46.1 percent fully vaccinated
  • Wisconsin — 2,636, 58.3 percent only one shot, 53.7 percent fully vaccinated
  • Missouri — 2,744, 52.5 percent only one shot, 44.9 percent fully vaccinated



Six of the western states account for 8.5 percent of new cases as of Saturday, Aug. 28. The states represent 9.7 percent of the population. These states accounted for 8.6 percent of new cases on Saturday, Aug. 21:

  • Arizona — 3,707, 56.4 percent only one shot, 47.6 percent fully vaccinated
  • Utah — 1,296, 56.2 percent only one shot, 47.5 percent fully vaccinated
  • Colorado — 2,080, 63.1 percent only one shot, 56.7 percent fully vaccinated
  • Washington — 4,697, 66.5 percent only one shot, 59.9 percent fully vaccinated
  • Nevada — 1,287, 67.5 percent only one shot, 47.7 percent fully vaccinated
