NEWS BRIEF: Buckhead cityhood could become “a race to the bottom”
Buckhead ‘split’ will increase problems
The push to separate Buckhead from Atlanta is generating some expensive obstacles, according to an article in The Guardian. The so-called “Buckxit” could be burdened with debts incurred by Atlanta for infrastructure and city employee pensions. Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms estimates the outstanding debt to be about $880 million. An opposition group called the Buckhead Coalition said Atlanta’s public school system would lose $232 million in tax revenue if Buckxit were to become a reality. Coalition spokesman Billy Linville said, “Carving up the city of Atlanta would be a race to the bottom,” but Buckhead City Committee chief Bill White blamed the group for “spewing lies and doomsday drivel.” theguardian.com
