NEWS BRIEF: Weekend planting will add hundreds of trees to Atlanta

A frenzy of tree planting will occur this weekend all over Atlanta, and 500 volunteers are needed to make it happen. Trees Atlanta wants to plant 800 trees on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-6 at locations in all 12 of the city’s council districts. The Plantlanta event will focus mainly on streets and parks near damaged waterways. “The neighborhoods chosen for planting are significant due to their position in critical watersheds in Atlanta, especially sites near impaired waterways,’’ Trees Atlanta said in a statement. “An effective mitigator is dense tree canopy, (creating) less burden on storm water drains and creeks and more benefits for people who live near them.” treesatlanta.org

The 23-year-old nonprofit has planted more than 68,000 trees in metro Atlanta and now is planning the city’s first arboretum - or “tree museum” - along the Beltline. Trees not only are beautiful and provide shade, but they also reduce the effect of the “urban heat island” and suck carbon out of the air that otherwise might contribute to global warming. Trees Atlanta always needs people to do its spadework.
