NEWS BRIEF: The Atlanta Opera hair and makeup artists demanding to be unionized

Hair and makeup stylists at The Atlanta Opera are aiming to form a union after working alongside other skilled workers during the height of the pandemic who received better protection, benefits, and pay. The AO claims the stylists are independent contractors and not employees and therefore ineligible to unionize, but the IATSE Local 798 union contradicts that. The National Labor Relations Board in Washington D.C. currently has the case under review.
On April 30, IATSE will be holding a 6 p.m. rally at the Cobb Energy Center in support of the stylists, most of whom are women of color. Supporters are urged to call the Atlanta Opera and demand union recognition. wixsite.com
