The decision is expected to lead to bans of the procedure in at least half the country

The decision Friday by the U.S. Supreme Court to end constitutional protections for abortion established 50 years ago is expected to lead to bans of the procedure in at least half the country, including the state of Georgia. “The authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote.

Justice Clarence Thomas had reportedly wanted his colleagues to go even further. The Georgia native wrote a separate opinion calling for the court to put same-sex marriage, gay sex and contraception cases up for discussion. Alito disagreed, saying, “Nothing in this opinion should be understood to cast doubt on precedents that do not concern abortion.” Details: ajc.com
