Horizon’s ‘Avenue Q’ leads Suzi Bass Awards

The “Sesame Street” parody and the Alliance Theatre’s ‘August: Osage County’ lead the awards for excellence in Atlanta theater.

The “Sesame Street” parody Avenue Q and the scorching family drama August: Osage County led the winners of the 2011-2012 Suzi Bass Awards for professional Atlanta theater. Horizon Theatre’s production of Avenue Q (which the theater plans to remount from Jan. 13-Feb. 26 of next year) picked up seven honors, including Best Musical, and the Alliance Theatre’s August: Osage County received four, including Best Play. In the major acting categories, Tess Malis Kincaid won lead play actress for August: Osage County at the Alliance; Eric J. Little, lead play actor for Superior Donuts, Horizon; Adrienne Reynolds, lead musical actress, Gut Bucket Blues, Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company; and Nick Arapoglou, lead musical actor, Avenue Q, Horizon.

Horizon Theatre won the highest number of awards at 10, including the Audience Choice Award for Outstanding Season and Margaret Baldin’s Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award for Horizon Theatre’s Night Blooms. Horizon also won the Audience Choice Award for Outstanding Season, and Actor’s Express’ Jessica Linden won the Volunteer Award. As announced ahead of the Nov. 7 awards ceremony, The Center for Puppetry Arts received the 2011 Spirit of Suzi Award, “which recognizes a person or organization that best demonstrates the qualities of Suzi Bass herself, including a dedication to professionalism and to Atlanta as cultural destination with a thriving theatre community.”
