In the droning 12 minutes of New Madrid’s epic number, “And She Smiles,†the Athens-based indie rock quartet condenses a quarter century of the Classic City’s musical legacy into one song. R.E.M’s ramshackle guitar lines, Pylon’s hypnotic velocity, and the psychedelic textures woven by the Elephant Six Collective bubble in and out of New Madrid’s music. While the group owes a debt to its local predecessors, New Madrid’s most recent release Sunswimmer proves that the group’s members can craft a sound divorced from its influences.
