The music of Anthony Gonzales is the idealization of a place that most people try to forget. As M83, the French electronic musician has spent his career dreaming up different teenage fantasies filtered through an array of hazy synthesizers and a healthy dose of nostalgia. On his latest album, Junk, Gonzales further cloaks himself in the tropes of ’80s synth-pop. While brooding subtlety dominated earlier albums, Junk takes a maximalist approach. Songs like the anthemic “Go!” build up a cascade of midnight saxophone solos while arena-ready drums match the heightened drama of adolescence.
