Proving Grounds is a series of black and white imagery of the United States Marine Corps recruit training on Parris Island SC. The large format prints from vintage 1960’s plastic cameras, are surreal and hauntingly visceral. These are accompanied by images taken with a 1950’s medium format Hasselblad of recruit training from 2014. This exhibition is part of Atlanta Celebrates Photography and this is the first time the photographs have been exhibited in their entirety.Jason Maris is a freelance photographer and documentary filmmaker that has been based in Atlanta since 1993.
