Resistance to allegory is as old as allegory itself. We may prefer what is clear to what is obscure, what is easy to what is difficult. But Netherlanders in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries loved allegory. In a lecture titled “Why can’t things be just as they are?”: On the Work and Reward of Allegory, Dr. James Clifton, director of the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation and curator of Renaissance and Baroque painting at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, uses images from the exhibition Through a Glass, Darkly to explore the benefits—the pleasure, the satisfaction, the spiritual transformation—that allegory can bring.
