Jay Som’s latest release Anak Ko is a deceptively inviting record. On the album, lead singer/guitarist Melina Duterte eases the listener in with a warm ambience that evokes a feeling of levelheadedness and introspection via lush guitar-pop and gauzy rock passages. However, upon further inspection, the sunny textures give way to address heartache and wistfulness. The effect is completely mesmerizing, even spellbinding, making Anak Ko the kind of record that won’t soon be forgotten. While the term ‘indie rock’ has lost its meaning over the years, Duterte’s work as Jay Som reminds us what it’s worth, as well as what it could be. — Jake Van Valkenburg
