Horror stories are designed to generate strong feelings from an audience. An open door to situations and environments that are extraordinary, this dramatic form of escapism invites the viewer to confront terror and suspense, then return to a normal world simply by exiting the theater.

This genre, arguably more than any other, has had the space to do bold things — to be transgressive and leave an indelible mark on the medium of film. Horror can also explore difficult or even unspeakable subjects and give the audience a greater understanding through metaphorical imagery and the visceral nature of the genre.
