Atlanta Symphony Orchestra: Zhenwei Shi: Walton’s Viola Concerto

Thursday February 24, 2022 08:00 PM EST
Cost: $23-$99

From the venue:

ASO: Appointed Principal Viola in 2019, Zhenwei Shi makes his solo subscription debut this weekend with Walton’s Viola Concerto. Bringing the rich, deep voice of the viola to center stage, Zhenwei Shi highlights the singing melodies of the concerto. Also, Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles presents music inspired by the written word: James Wilson’s The Green Fuse (based on a poem by Dylan Thomas) and a work that came out of a pilgrimage to meet Sir Walter Scott; Felix Mendelssohn had traveled to Scotland where the author was less than welcoming. Along the way, he visited Holyrood Palace where the seeds of the “Scottish” Symphony began to take root. “Everything around is broken and moldering, and the bright sky shines in. I believe I found the beginning of my Scotch symphony there today.”
