Best of Atlanta: Best Jukebox

The Highlander After Dark, Readers

Double your pleasure at the Highlander by playing both the front and back (our fave) jukeboxes, which house everything from Sly Parliament funk to Butthole Surfers junk to Circle Jerk punk. Mellower options can be found — John Lee Hooker, Nat King Cole, U2 — but it’s mostly hard-rockin’. The Waffle House jukebox serves up new pop (Britney Spears, ‘NSync), old pop (Lionel Richie, Mariah Carey) and the “Waffle Do Wop,” plus many other uniquely Waffle House songs that are not, we repeat, not humorous, intentionally or otherwise. Our waitress Linda actually threatened to leave when she realized we’d played “Special Lady (at the Waffle House)” for her. On the other hand, where else can you get one play for a quarter?
