Poll: CL readers want Confederate monuments and street signs scrapped

Advisory committee prepares recommendations for Mayor Kasim Reed

In a Twitter poll conducted late last week, Creative Loafing readers told us they want to see Confederate street signs and statues removed from the public domain. Our study garnered about as many participants as did most mayoral race polls and we didn’t contact people via landline telephone, either.

At Atlanta City Hall, the Confederate Monuments Advisory Committee has been compiling a list of Atlanta’s Civil War relics and hashing out how to deal with each one. Douglas Blackmon, a committee leader and the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Slavery by Another Name, says stripping streets of Rebel Army titles has nothing to do with “erasing history,” as many monument defenders have argued.

Last night, the committee met to discuss the recommendations they’ll give to Mayor Kasim Reed. The verdict: Not all Confederate monuments are created equal; some should be torn down and relocated, and some should receive the proper “contextualization,” as committee member Sonji Jacobs put it, according to FOX 5.
