The Randomness of the Symbols, Wilay Méndez Páez, MOCA

— Afro-Cuban artist Wilay Méndez Páez forges iron and steel into Egyptian and Sumerian symbols intended to depict what history has endeavored to obliterate. “In these welded forms live the memory of exile, war, and diaspora, and the truth that Blackness, migration, and marginality are still met with bars, cages, and walls built to enclose,” Páez says. Apart from sculpture created with found materials, the Atlanta resident also uses painting and poetry to express his singular worldview. — Kevin C. Madigan
