Fruit Bats with Sarah Klang at Variety Playhouse
CRITIC’S PICK
Tues., Nov. 17
Fruit Bats, Sarah Klang, Variety Playhouse — The brainchild of Eric D. Johnson, the founding and only consistent member, Fruit Bats’ music is gleaming, charming, breezy folk/pop influenced by The Shins, The Kinks and others. His youthful voice and knack for sweet melodies has continued unabated from his 2001 debut through to this June’s soulful The Landfill. With dozens of wonderful tunes to choose from it’s hard to say what he’ll pick but you’re sure to hear his banjo-led “Humbug Mountain Song,” (2016) his most streamed composition. Opener Klang worked with Johnson on her honeyed ballad “Last Forever,” so you’ll surely get a live version of that. — Hal Horowitz
