The Steeldrivers at Variety Playhouse

CRITIC’S PICK

The SteelDrivers, Variety Playhouse — The five time GRAMMY® nominated (and once winning) progressive bluegrass quintet has had plenty of personnel changes over a two-decade existence. They might be best known as Americana superstar Chris Stapleton’s first band (he left in 2010). While that loss could be problematic, the SteelDrivers with veteran singer/fiddler Tammy Rogers, bucked that trend when The Muscle Shoals Recordings (2015) nabbed that GRAMMY®. They tour in support of Outrun (2025) as frisky, frothy and even humorous (“You Should See the Other Guy”) an album as they have recorded. This two-night stand speaks to their status in a genre they went a long way to help popularize. — Hal Horowitz
