Boston-based Palehound, the musical endeavor of 21-year-old Ellen Kempner, knows how to turn a messy breakup into a venerable work of art. Clever lyrics about growing up and breaking up punctuate lo-fi instrumentals and deft guitar picking on her debut full-length, Dry Food. The album is equal parts vulnerable and unapologetic. “You made beauty a monster to me/ So I’m kissing all the ugly things I see,†she sings. Her unflinching performances hold just as much spite and spunk as her lyrics.
