Tunes From the Tombs

The seventh annual Tunes From the Tombs hosts local bands and food trucks while immersed in the scenery of Oakland Cemetery. This year the lineup features performances by Tinsley Ellis and members of the Hampton Grease Band and Aquarium Rescue Unit for a tribute concert to the late Col. Bruce Hampton. Other local stars performing throughout the day include Secondhand Swagger, Cadillac Jones, Tray Dahl and Jugtime Ragband, Spencer Garn and the Diamond Street Players, Blake Rainey and His Demons, Dang Dang Dang, the Bonaventure Quartet, Wasted Potential Brass Band, Little Country Giants, Octave and the Atlanta Taiko Project.


Meet, Eat and Greet w/ John Oates

Cross an item from your bucket list with Meet, Eat and Greet, a dinner with John Oates of Hall & Oates this Sat., June 10, at Taco Cowboy. The legendary musician will be in Atlanta to read and discuss his latest memoir, Change of Seasons, a “wild ride through all the eras, personalities and music that has shaped Oates into what he is.” To make your wait for the complimentary book signing significantly easier, food by chef Tom Catherall and Italian wine slushies courtesy of Lasorda Family Wines will be provided.


Puerto Rican Heritage Celebration

JP Atlanta - 230 Peachtree St. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30303 $85. 7 p.m.

For this second annual event, JP Atlanta’s executive chef Julio Delgado has invited five chefs from various Latin American restaurants around the city and abroad to host a special cultural showcase of Puerto Rican cuisine. Chefs Hector Santiago, Andre Gomez, Jimmy Carey, Xavier Pacheco and Pedro Alvarez will serve dinner from live food stations, where each chef will explain how their prepared dish is influenced by their heritage. Guests can wash down their meals with specialty rum cocktails, beer and wine while enjoying live Latin music. A portion of the proceeds benefit Ser Familia, a local charity dedicated to strengthening Latino families through education and empowerment. Tickets must be purchased in advance, and include full access to food and drinks.


Somos Atlanta

Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery - 88 Forsyth St. S.W. Atlanta, GA 30303 $5 suggested donation. 7 p.m.

On June 12, 2016, 49 people were tragically murdered during “Latin Night” at Pulse Nightclub of the 49 victims, almost 90 percent were Latinx. A year after the tragedy, Somos Sur has partnered with Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery and La Choloteca: Ley de Latinx to present Somos Atlanta, a fundraising art show in solidarity with the victims of the Pulse Nightclub tragedy and LGBTQ Latinxs across the U.S. The event will highlight the importance of safe spaces for LGBTQ people of color, and will feature artwork by Fresca Linda and Josephine Figueroa, as well as music by DJ Esme and the band Bitter. All proceeds raised will go to Southerners On New Ground.


ICON: A celebration of Rihanna

When Rihanna’s debut single “Pon De Replay” dropped in 2005, the Barbadian singer was only 17. Since 2005, the she has released eight albums and more than a decade’s worth of anthems to dance to. A monthly event curated by Barry Brandon and For All Humans, ICON celebrates recording artists and their music through burlesque and drag performances, live vocalists, aerial and trapeze acts and other performances. The celebration of Rihanna’s music and career will include performances by Biqtch Puddin’, LaRico Potts and Gwendolyn Van Cartier.
