From the venue:
The balafon (xylophone) is an unmistakable staple of the West African music. The playful plonking of mallets on hardwood keys, interacting with bass and percussion is a universal invitation to groove. Trio Da Kali features a talented lineup of second generation Malian musicians including Lassana Diabaté (balafon), Mamadou Kouyaté (ngoni) and singer Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté. For their first and only Southeastern appearance, the trio performs songs from Ladilikan, a new collaboration with the Kronos Quartet. Lassana Diabaté’s balafon work and Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté’s impressive octave range provide a particularly bright ray of light, while Kouyaté holds down the rhythm. It’s unfortunate that Kronos Quartet won’t be joining them for this show, but it’s a great opportunity to witness three Malian musical master at the top of their game.
