Cellist Nick Ogawa has traveled an unlikely path toward making music as Takénobu. The classically trained cellist left his musical background behind to dabble in everything from bluegrass to pop to folk. As a solo artist, Takénobu has slowly evolved into more of a full-band affair, which now includes violinist Brian Harper (Blee’s Company), drummer John Craig (Sealions), and other local musicians. Takénobu’s live shows resemble the likes of artists such as the Books, Ben Sollee, and Andrew Bird, as they fuse classical sweeping strings arrangements with pop-oriented songwriting.
