Former senator David Perdue is planning to challenge incumbent Brian Kemp in next year’s election for Georgia governor. The Republican’s decision to run against the Republican incumbent, which was announced Sunday, is rattling some conservatives who fear the match could increase the likelihood of a victory in the race by Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams. Republican state Sen. Chuck Hufstetler of Rome tweeted that Perdue’s entry is “Good news for Stacey Abrams. Bad news for Republicans.” Perdue ran for reelection to the U.S. Senate in 2020 but lost to Democrat Jon Ossoff. Kemp aide Cody Hall said Perdue is entering the contest merely to “soothe his own bruised ego” over that defeat and blamed him for the Republicans’ loss of the Senate. abcnews.go.com
