When Othello, a respected general, overlooks his ensign, Iago, for promotion in favor of the inexperienced Cassio, Iago is furious. To enact revenge, he conspires to fuel insecurity and doubt into Othello’s relationship with his new wife Desdemona. In doing so, Iago sets off a chain of events that ultimately lead to a devastating climax. In our production, OTHELLO is set in a not-too-distant future where society as we know it has splintered apart. Groups of well-intended citizens are setting off to build new, more equitable communities. However, the old patterns of racism, xenophobia, and jealousy threaten to destroy the characters’ hopes for a better world. OTHELLO is produced by the Oglethorpe University Theatre Program and features a cast of Oglethorpe student actors.
